Overview

CONFIDENTIAL, a leading data center provider, approached Risk and Safety Solutions Melbourne (RSSM) for expert assistance with the safety and compliance requirements of their new large-scale data center in NSW. As data centers are critical infrastructure, ensuring optimal fire safety and emergency preparedness is essential to protect assets, maintain operations, and meet regulatory obligations.

The scope of our work included:
– Fire Safety Study (FSS)
– Emergency Response Plan (ERP)
– Emergency Services Information Package (EIP)

Our team worked closely with Client to deliver comprehensive and practical solutions tailored to the unique requirements of their large-scale facility.

Our Approach and Services

Fire Safety Study (FSS)

– We developed a detailed Fire Safety Study in compliance with NSW regulatory requirements HIPAP 2.
– Our FSS assessed fire prevention, detection, protection, and mitigation systems, ensuring they align with best practices and the specific hazards present in a high-tech data center environment.
– The study included a risk-based evaluation of potential fire scenarios, ensuring the fire protection systems were sufficient to address potential challenges, such as electrical fires or overheating equipment.

– The consequence analysis was conducted for fire, explosion and toxicity of lithium-ionn battery and diesel

Emergency Response Plan (ERP)

– A robust Emergency Response Plan was created to prepare Client’s staff for potential emergencies.
– The ERP outlined clear roles, responsibilities, and communication protocols to ensure an effective response in case of fire, hazardous materials incidents, or other emergencies.
– It also incorporated coordination with external emergency services, including Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW), to ensure smooth collaboration during a crisis.

Emergency Services Information Package (ESIP)

For FRNSW

– The Emergency Services Information Package (ESIP) provided all critical information necessary for emergency responders to access and navigate the site efficiently.
– The ESIP included site layouts, hydrant locations, hazardous material inventories, and contact details, helping to reduce response time and improve firefighter safety.

Outcome and Impact

Through our collaboration with Client, the data center now has a comprehensive fire protection system and emergency management framework in place. The Fire Safety Study ensures the facility is equipped with the appropriate systems to prevent and control potential fires, while the ERP and ESIP enhance preparedness and coordination with emergency responders.

Our efforts not only ensured compliance with NSW regulations but also provided Client with confidence in their fire safety and emergency response capabilities. The new data center is now well-prepared to operate safely and efficiently, with clear protocols to manage risks and protect people, assets, and operations.
